Walking the Walk - 5k's and beyond
My first 5k was several years ago. It was the SoBeFit 5k. I didn't finish first, but I didn't finish last - and most importantly, I finished.
I considered giving up so many times, but it was oddly encouraging seeing complete strangers cheering me on... they were gathered along the streets, standing in the doorways of their businesses, and just enjoying watching everyone walking/running along the streets of South Beach.
Since then I've done a few more 5k's - Susan G. Koman(s), Suicide Prevention, Arthritis Foundation - and while they are all great causes I can honestly say that I don't do them for the cause they represent - I do the for me. The feeling of starting and finishing something, while others are there with you doing the same thing, is an amazing feeling.
This year I will be doing at least 5 such events. Not all of the are 5k's, but they are all walks that I am looking forwards to, and my goal is to run at least one of them.
On the agenda so far for this year:
Color Me Rad 5k
This one is going to be a blast... of color! It's a 5k walk where you will be attacked with color bombs (colored corn starch) by other walkers, runners and color squad volunteers. It's going to be messy, it's going to be gross, it's going to be so much fun!
Making Strides
This is a 2 mile walk/run that will be held in Portland. Similar to the Susan G. Koman this is a breast cancer walk, however this is managed by the American Cancer Society. While this walk is a bit out of the way I feel it's important to participate as Making Strides and the American Cancer Society are both organizations that PartyLite as an organization contributes to, especially through the sale of their Strawberry Rhubarb GloLite Jar Candles.
Susan G. Koman Race for the Cure
Not scheduled yet for this year, but I've signed up to walk several years both here and in Miami, and this is a great program to participate in.
Hoping to do more this year, but these are the three that I know for sure I will be doing. I'm going to start a C25k program tomorrow (Couch 2 5k) - hoping to be able to run my first 5k, ever, 04/13/13!

Myself and Jessy - Can you tell it was not an easy (or cool) walk?
And I'm materialistic enough to feel that the best part what that they gave every person who crossed the finish line a medal. Nothing fancy, but it was a completion medal, and it meant more to me than anything else that day. It still does. That was back in 2010, and it's still hanging in my office, right next to Jessy's.
Our medals.

From their site:
Start out as clean as a newborn babe, and throughout the run, you'll coat your chaffing thighs with Color Bombs of blue, green, pink, purple, and yellow until your face, shirt, and body come out silk-screened like a tie-dyed hippy on the other side. Each section of the run adds a new explosion of color to your clean, painter’s palate until you cross the finish line into a final blitzkrieg of color.
