Food AA & The Fresh 20
I haven't had to attend a mental 'Food AA' meeting in a while. I don't think about food all the time like I did before. Planning has helped. I can't stress the importance of planning, along with tracking, if you are trying to loose weight.
On Saturday mornings (if not Thursday/Friday), I plan out dinners for the rest of the week. From there I build my shopping list for the grocery store. This has also had the added benefit of saving us money, food isn't getting wasted and we're not going to the store all the time.
To help with my planning I've come up with 'theme' nights. These are loose themes that are just a guide to help me come up with meals:
To help with grocery list making during the week I have a great pad of paper that I keep on the fridge (it's got a magnet on the back) and I add necessary items to it during the week. It's kinda awesome!
At this time my lunch during the week consists of the above mentioned salad, and a Weight Watchers Smart One frozen item, on most days. Yes, there's sodium, and eventually it will not help with my weight loss and I'll have to switch to something else, but at this time it's a great tasting warm addition to my lunch, without the rubbery reheated taste/feel of chicken from the night before. Occasionally I have a sandwich for lunch, however I go through phases of what I do and don't want, and since sometime in January I haven't been in the sandwich frame of mind.
While I'm not thinking of food all the time anymore, I'm pretty bored with the same things. I've been trying new recipes here and there, but it's complicated to buy lots of new ingredients that I may not have laying around.
That brings me to a new idea. At my Weight Watchers meeting last night, a couple shared their 'no thinking' strategy to food. They have discovered a website called The Fresh 20. It's a meal planning website that it geared to fresh ingredients and healthy eating. They plan 5 dinners in your wanted category (classic, vegetarian, gluten free) using 20 ingredients and your prep work is done mostly in one day. I requested a sample menu last night when I got home and I'm considering trying it out. My only holdback is how picky I am, but since that's something that I want to change, this may be a good way to go for it.
I'll let you if I decide to go for it, and if so, how it goes.
